Invincible Season 3
Hey everyone and welcome, today we will be talking about season 3 of the show Invincible. Fun Fact: as you may know Robert Kirkman who is the creator of Invincible and another comic series turned TV show The Walking Dead used some familiar faces or voices for this series considering the original Guardians of the Globe were voiced by actors from The Walking Dead. This season came out in 2025 and stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, and Christian Convery and was created by Robert Kirkman. So without further ado, let's get right into it.
Invincible Season 3 sees Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, facing off against a variety of Villians to become stronger in case another Viltrumite attacks. While he’s doing this, he’s also teaching his half-brother, Oliver, from his father’s side, how to use his powers for good. With stronger villains popping up and the return of some old ones, Mark must navigate how to protect the people he loves while also protecting the rest of the world.
Invincible is a superhero action show. It has similar vibes to Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Brightburn, or Young Justice.
I love superhero stuff and I've enjoyed prior seasons of Invincible so I was excited for this season to come out. I'm so excited they got rid of the split season because that was so annoying to me since it wasn't that many episodes. I think the thing that interests me about Invincible is that it fills a gap that I felt was missing from the superhero genre in film and tv which is the mental toll of being a hero. It is a small thing and there are shows that display it but in this show, I feel like they truly highlight how stressful it can be to try and not feel for all the innocent lives lost in a battle, the PTSD from getting hurt badly in a battle, and being trained from childhood to be a weapon just to name a few. The superhero genre has been around for a while and I think some topics are still not addressed at all or not enough and invincible is showing some of these things better than other movies or TV shows. It's not perfect but I do love to see the kick-ass fight scenes and all the normal drama and then also the trauma.
I love exploring the other superheroes' childhoods and seeing how they weren't as great as you may have thought which this season explores. We see how Dupli-Cate's father was mentally unwell and taken away so she was trained as a weapon along with her brother Multi-Paul, Rex was sold to the government by his parents, Ray's parents just forced her to train so she missed out on a childhood, and we have seen how Eves childhood was in past seasons due to her awful father. I think it's important to show this and how it affects them because a lot of them have only known that their worth is based on their ability to be useful to the government and don't realize that there is so much more to do than be a superhero all the time. Some superheroes decide they want to leave like Ray and some don't want to like Rex because it's all they have known and its so much uncertainty with that. I like that the season highlighted this even briefly because it's important to understand these characters and understand that their abilities may seem like a blessing but it is often times a curse too.
The show focuses on Invincible but there are other heroes involved too that fight crime and the show struggles to include enough of their storyline to make us feel a connection to them. There are also so many characters who are around who don't come up often and I forgot that they were in the show in the first place. Some episodes have these storylines that feel complete for the episode and then jump to something else completely different like when we pivot to Allan and Nolan breaking out of prison. The tone is inconsistent in some episodes like Rex sacrificing himself and When the Party Is Over by Billie Eilish starts playing and it's just a sad scene to see the destruction and pain caused by the alternate Invincible’s and then we pivot to high-intensity action because the episode isn't over and that shifts the tone. I think those dramatic shifts could be done but the way it’s done in this season doesn’t feel like a smooth transition, it feels like whiplash.
All these things are different reasons why the show should do 1 of two things, stop adding more new characters so they can address all the loose ends or have more episodes in the season which I think is better. I think that is the struggle when adapting comic books to movies or TV shows because comics can switch from story to story and if it's in the same comic you can easily look back at the page real quick for a refresher if you forgot something. You can rewind a show or rewatch a season to be reminded of characters but it's hard because there are so many other shows and if you are rewinding then you have to remember where you left off so you aren't rewatching the same thing over and over again so most people just don't do it myself included. I think Shows like this need to be mindful of this because I love the show but it's frustrating being in season 3 and not knowing much about many characters, being reminded of all these villains, and trying to remember if they are new or old and keep up with these storylines that feel out of place like Mark going to the future. I'm sure all these storylines will come up again and I'm grateful that they don't forget about them but it is hard to figure out why they were included or what the importance is. A longer season would benefit this show because there is just so much they want to pack in but it's just not enough time. The change in tone also made me think maybe an hour long isn't the way to go for every episode because I think Rex’s sacrifice should've been at the end of the episode and then you sit with it a bit instead of having whiplash because we switched to something else but then you have the finale which needed all the time it had to give us a fantastic finale.
Episode 3 starts off silent and shows these bank robbers with abilities but one seems very aware and doesn't want to hurt people and moves them out of harm's way. Invincible and Oliver come and stop them and then we see one of the criminals let Oliver go because he is not an evil person. We get a flashback of how we got to them robbing a bank and it's actually sad. It's two brothers I think and they get fired from their job but their job already was not paying enough and since they are down on their luck they rob a bank. It shows you that some villains are only doing it because they have no other option like these guys didn't hurt anyone and really just needed the money. It showed the humility in some villains because they are not happy to do this and they don't treat what they are doing as more important than the lives of the people around them. They initially fight with Mark and Oliver but I think because of this humility they stop which also shows why these low-level villains would never be big threats because they care too much about hurting people. It's nice to see sometimes that villains don't have some complex plot or vendetta but sometimes they are just struggling and see no other way out.
The power scale on this show is so inconsistent and it's one of the most frustrating things on this show. They show Mark getting stronger and training more but then when he fights his punches don't seem to have nearly enough power to cause harm. I know he doesn't want to kill people but he could knock them out and if it's not a human maybe put a little more effort because it's causing so much damage. It would also be nice to see some of these characters' powers grow. Rex as a character has grown on me but his powers seem useless because villains just shrug it off, Ray can shrink then grow to her normal size but can she get bigger, are there limits to Dupli-Cate’s powers, and what can Eve really do with her mental blocks and how much of that is stopping her from being a powerhouse. This season we see so many heroes besides Invincible and I'm like none of them seem useful in a battle and the show doesn't give us any hints if that will change. The Guardians of the Globe are the perfect example because all they seem to do is lose or if they win it's by the skin of their teeth. I think it would be nice to see some heroes who seem more useful against villains and maybe attempt to explore if powers grow or just stay consistent.
When I heard Angstrom's voice at the end of episode 3 I knew he was up to something crazy. In episode 7 he unleashes alternate Invincible’s who are bad and they cause so much damage that the heroes on Earth struggle. I was in shock at how quickly they were able to cause so much destruction and how psycho they were. The heroes should be happy that it was a part of a bigger plan that failed because they had so much restraint and I think if they were released and just told to do whatever they would have leveled the planet and then fought each other to see who should rule. Not all of the Invincible’s survived and the ones that did are in an alternate universe so I’m wondering if they will come back. It's just crazy that Angstrom got them to help him and I'm interested to see the response from more people as time goes on. I did think Angstrom would do more but they set him up as a villain who would keep coming back. The alternate Invincible’s did bring up a question, will people know Mark is invincible? I say this mostly because not all of them had a mask on so if you start putting 2 and 2 together you will figure it out.
We get a little glimpse of Allen and Nolan when Allen decides to break out of prison. The storyline is important but it did feel a bit out of place, honestly should've been a separate episode. One thing I did love was how Nolan mentioned that there are only 50 Viltrumites that are full blood left which the Viltrumites are worried about. While that does make it seem like they have a chance against them, that is still like 50 super-strong people who can probably take out Earth with no problem. It also made me think about what happened to all the weaknesses that Mark found out about Viltrumites like that should be discussed more. It does seem to hint at a battle with Viltrumites coming soon.
Right after dealing with all these alternate Invincible’s, Conquests comes along and gives Mark the fight of his life. Conquest is psychotic and enjoys torture and fighting and won't let you just give up. His fight with Invincible seemed like it might be worse than Mark's fight with his dad in season one in terms of damage. Conquest was going worldwide with his damage and Mark was struggling to keep up. I thought maybe Oliver could help but he became a liability and almost died which was stressful to see. Debbie said one important thing to Oliver which was like don't let him catch you and that's literally the first thing he did after getting one punch in. Eve comes to help but with the way they show Eve I knew she wasn't going to be helpful she did something cool with changing the air density while he was flying and I'm like girl why can't you do that any other time or something cool and smart with your powers like that. Eventually, Eve taps into her blocked powers after she is basically killed which fries Conquest's skin off and Mark's head-butts him to near death which was wild but it was the only weapon he had. This was a good fight to show how unprepared Mark, Cecil, or anyone else is to take on the Viltrumites. Cecil was supposed to incinerate him but of course, he doesn't so I'm interested to see what ends up happening to Conquest and if they will be able to learn something from his body or get more people killed.
The title card is something that I still love to see introduced in an episode. They never stick to keeping it the same and you never really know where it will be in the episode. I love how even though the title card is nothing amazing they make it stand out by doing something quirky by using it to replace someone when they say Invincible. My favorite use of it this season is in the Powerplex episode where he keeps saying Invincible and they keep throwing the title card briefly every time he says it and then finally slam it down at the end of his speech or whatever he was saying. It was funny to see how they used the title card in that instance and honestly, I thought after season one they would give you the title cards but I'm glad they didn't.
One thing I love about this show is that Invincible does is not kill off his villains. Even though I did forget some of them, I do think it's good to show that they are around, especially if they are alive still. In the final episode they kind of did a rundown of all his villains that are alive and it did make me worried because I realized how many of his villains are ridiculously strong. If his villains ever team up I fear it may be the death of Invincible because he would not be able to take on more than one of them. I do eventually think they should kill off some because they are stacking up and nothing is happening with them which made me forget that some were still alive until I saw them in the last minutes of the finale.
My Favorite part of this season was how they showed these characters sticking up for themselves. When Mark gets attacked by Cecil he goes to Guardians HQ and tells them which makes some of them realize that Cecil and the government only want to control them. It's interesting because seeing how fast Cecil turned on Mark showed that it could happen to them too because the goal is to control the weapon and if you can't control it maybe silence it. Some of the characters leave and some stay but it does open your eyes to how all these characters have been yes-men and haven't been used. Later we hear Ray talking about how she almost died which changed her perspective on things and this is just what makes me love the show even more because that should be brought up in these superhero shows and movies sometimes. Like yes, I'm a hero and I want to help but I went through a traumatic thing trying to save the world and no one seems to care about me and my well-being. Some start to attempt to live their life outside of being a superhero to try and find some balance but also struggle with not helping when they know they can. I think it's great to show that these characters want to be heroes but also want to have a life outside of that too and the best option for them to do that is to leave Cecil and do it on their own.
Invincible season 3 is a fun ride as we see more of what Mark aka Invincible has to deal with as a superhero. the season had its flaws and while I pointed them out don't take that as me not liking this season because I really did. I'm looking forward to seeing how they continue his story and maybe we will get more special episodes that deal with other characters.
